Yet another reason to make your own green cleaners
I have long wondered whether pesticides and toxic chemicals, such as the ones found in common cleaning products, have contributed to the increase in health problems like cancer and infertility. Betty forwarded an article to us from the San Francisco Chronicle that indicates there might be some concrete links. A chemical called ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBE) can be found in cleaners like Formula 409, Lemon Fresh Pine-Sol and even Simple Green (yikes!), but it is also causing infertility in lab animals that have been exposed to it. The chemical is also on California's list of toxic air contaminents. Manufacturers are not required to list it as an ingredient for some crazy reason, and many, of course, are denying any connection between EGBE and infertility. But I view this as another good reason to stick to good ol' vinegar and water. I'm telling you, it works!
