Outdoor kids: camping it up
In a few weeks, we are going tent camping for a weekend with two other families. We went with them last year. The kids all had a blast. The adults played cards and downed lots of beer. So we're all looking forward to our next camping adventure. Here's what really helped, and some of the lessons learned:
- One of the families camps a lot. They gave me a copy of their detailed packing list. I don't think I could have pulled it off without it.
- Bug spray should be the first thing on your packing list (we brought some adult spray with DEET and some non-DEET spray for the kids).
- Make sure your tent is big enough for your family (we camped in a 3-person with 2 adults and 2 kids). It was pretty cramped. We're looking for a bigger tent on craigslist right now.
- Have a quick meeting of the moms and decide if you all need to bring everything or there can be some shared resources. We decided we didn't need 3 stoves and 3 bags of marshmallows. We all coordinated dinners so that one family wasn't eating steak while another was eating franks and beans.
- Don't bring any nice clothing. Pack your grubbiest jeans and t-shirts. For whatever odd reason, last year I packed normal to nice clothing for the kids, and after two days of making mud-pies in the lake and no showers and layer upon layer of sunscreen and bugspray and smoke from the camp fire, the normal clothes had to be demoted to grubby/gardening clothes.
- Slip on shoes are essential for all members of the family -- all that going in and out of the tent.
That's about all I can think of for now. Have you been camping in the great outdoors? Do you have any lessons to share from your experiences so that everyone remains a happy camper?
