Green goings-on: Sept. 7-9

For us parents of kindergartners, it's the last week of summer! Let's only hope that we have decent weather for a change because there's good stuff going on:

Swift Watch, Sept. 6-26: Every September the Vaux's Swifts swoop and spiral into the chimney to roost at Chapman Elementary School (NW 26th & Raleigh). Volunteers from the Portland Audubon Society will be on hand each night to answer questions. It all happens between 7-8pm. I've heard this is a spectacular sight, so this might be the year we finally check it out.

Muddy Boot Organic Festival, Sept 7-9: I've been waiting all summer for this! Lots of kids activities and great info and workshops on residential solar and wind energy, green building, composting and just about every green thing you'd want to learn about. Lots of food and craft vendors and live music! The festival runs Saturday from noon-9pm and Sunday noon-7pm. Jean-Michel Cousteau gives the keynote speech, Friday night at 7:30; tickets are $35. St. Philip Neri Church @ SE 16th & Division.

Forest Park Microcosmos, Sept. 8: Hike through Forest Park and find and identify insects that dwell within. Bring boots, water, snacks, magnifying glass, drinks and a butterfly net if you have one. All ages welcome. Register online; cost is $5 per person.

Family Bike Rides, Marine Drive Bike Path, Sept. 9: Led by members of the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club, these rides encourage families to get out their two-wheelers and hit the road. Meet at 10am; ride for 10 miles.

Weekend Nature Walk at Tryon Creek State Park, Sept. 8, 10-11:30am, all ages, FREE

Ladybug Nature Walks @ Smith & Bybee Lakes, Sept. 7, 10-11:30am, all ages, $2 per child.
