Every Day is Earth Day

I realize that many people want to keep their kids off computers for as long as possible, and limit screen time as much as possible. I hear ya. We highly limit screen time (none during the school week, with some weekend indulgences). But I have to say I thought this was the cutest thing. Over the winter break, my daughter's kindergarten teacher assigned some reading homework on Starfall.com. I'd never heard of this site. So I checked it out prior to the day this homework was assigned. And it seemed educational, free of ads, fairly harmless. So I loaded the page with my daughter on homework day. And she said: "Mom! Mom! I know this! This is what we do in the Lucky Lab!" The Lucky Lab is what she calls the school computer lab. Don't ask me why. It's also the name of a local pizzeria and microbrewery, so I was a bit alarmed the first time she said it. "You went to the Lucky Lab today??? I didn't know about any field trips to microbreweries??" My misunderstanding, but now the name is so cute I can't correct her. Anyway, she started clicking like a pro and gave me a veritable tour of Starfall's learning modules. But by far, the cutest has to be Every Day is Earth Day. They get to drag and drop cans, plastic bottles and paper to recycling bins in an outdoor setting. And as the landscape gets cleaned up, the animals start to come out. Just darling!! Literacy learning with an enviro-spin.
