Go native!
The East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District's 7th Annual Native Plant Sale is upon us! Why should you care? Well, if you live in the Portland area, these are the plants that are native to our area. They require less water, no fertilizer or pesticides, are not invasive and require less maintenance. They thrive in our area and provide an excellent foundation for any garden. For the longest time I assumed our native plants were just random rangy shrubs that one might glance over during a hike in the forest. Not so! Our climate is host to some lovely, lovely native flowers, trees and shrubs. And you can get them for a STEAL at this plant sale. (I know, you're thinking, who wants to work in the yard in this weather?) Trust me, it will be worth it this spring and next when you see them start to bud and bloom! The romantic, delicate Bleeding Hearts! The dramatic Red Columbine! The proud Oregon Iris! You need them in your yard! (I know I do!)
So, check out the Web site and pre-order if you can. The plants are inexpensive and they go fast. You can pre-order until Monday, February 4 at 5pm and pick them up February 16 between 10am-3pm. Visit the Web site for all the details, photos and info.
