Eastside GreenGroup February meeting notes
Thank you Hope for meeting with our Eastside GreenGroup moms on Friday. Here are the notes from their meeting:
A big thanks to those who participated in today's East side GreenGroup meeting. For those of you who couldn't make it, here are some notes from today's meeting:
- Gardening. This was a big topic of conversation today. Growing Gardens has some great workshops coming up which are free for low-income families that are enrolled in their gardening programs (they'll even build gardens, raised beds, etc.) or for those that can afford it, they work on a sliding scale. Caitlyn said they also help with soil testing for lead.
- Mommymilk. They are starting to discuss putting together a seedling swap as well as a book discussion group on Living Simply with Kids by Marie Sherlock.
- DIY. We talked about some of the projects we're starting to take on: baking our own bread, chewy granola bars, making our own yogurt, etc. It looks like there are going to be quite a few attempts this year at canning and using a food dehydrator.
- Old T-shirts. We discussed new uses for old t-shirts. Breanna is making reusable bags from old t-shirts and also talked about a book called Alterknits, which apparently shows how to take an old t-shirt, cut it in a continuous spiral and then knit it into a rug. Breanna is also making diapers and cloth wipes from old t-shirts.
- Household Herbs. This Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2pm at Tryon Creek State Park, there is a workshop on Herbal Salves. Pre-registration required. Unfortunately I found out about this too late, because they also had a workshop on herbal tinctures and teas on Jan. 27th. I'll have to keep an eye out for more workshops like these.
