Portland area Earth Day events, April 19-20

Saturday, April 19

City Repair Project's Earth Day at Overlook Park, 10am-10pm: This is the big Earth Day celebration in Portland (oh let's hope it doesn't snow). Dance of the Dinosaur is the theme, with loads of music and entertainment; the Kid's Village featuring jugglers, marimbas, parades, games and activities; and eco-friendly business booths. FREE. 3704 N. Interstate.

Rock 'N Recycle at Lloyd Center, 9:30am-4:30pm: Radio Disney AM 1640 introduces a new event to Portland that will provide interactive and educational resources to families on how to keep our environment green. The first 200 kids to arrive will receive a Jiminy Cricket trio bracelet set. FREE.

Trash to Treasure Days at the Portland Children's Museum, 10am-4pm: Learn to be better stewards of the earth while discovering how to turn trash into treasure. Workshops will be offered (register upon arrival), Recycle Man will teach kids how to battle waste at 1 and 3pm, and Opal School will be collecting treasures (buttons, bottle caps, keys, etc) for use in future projects, so bring them along. FREE with regular admission.

Portland Farmers Market, 8:30am-2pm: At 10am on the main stage, local designer Lucy Hardiman will demonstrate the creation and care of container gardens, and kids get a free packet of ladybugs. The market is just a great place to take kids, pick up some fresh produce, listen to music and enjoy our community. In the South Park Blocks at PSU.

SOLV-IT Earth Day Clean-up, 9am-1pm: There are dozens of project sites around the metro area that will be cleaned up: ivy pulls, graffiti and litter removal, you name it. Find a site and register online.

Oregon Garden, 10am-4pm: Garden admission will be FREE April 19. Enjoy educational exhibits, recycled art activities in the Greenhouse Cafe, crafts and seedling give-aways in the Children's Garden, composting demos, music and food. In Silverton, Oregon.

Sunday, April 20

Party for the Planet at the Oregon Zoo, Noon-4pm: Games, crafts and activities focused on preserving the planet will be in abundance. The Year of the Polar Bear festivities continue, helping draw attention to global warming and how we can stop it. FREE with zoo admission, $6.75-$9.75.
