Baby step: don't start the car until you're ready to drive

We've written about how inefficient and damaging it is to idle your car's engine. How it just burns gas, and you're not going anywhere. Of course, being an EnviroMom, you might guess I NEVER idle my car, right? One would think. What I've noticed is that I have a bad habit of starting the car, then putting on my seatbelt, then putting it into gear. I don't know if this will amount to a hill of beans, but I'm working on a new habit. Get in the car, put on seatbelt first, then start the car. Over a lifetime, I imagine I'll save some gas that way if I'm not letting the car idle while strapping on my seatbelt. I doubt it adds up to more than a few seconds each time I get in the car, but I do get in the car far more often than I would like, And some day (far too soon), we'll go through that hellish rite of passage of teaching our children to drive. Hopefully I will have ingrained the new habit prior to teaching them to drive, so that they are not wasting gas by idling. Baby steps...
