Portland Muddy Boot Festival: September 5-7, 2008

The grassroots Muddy Boot Festival put on by the members of St. Philip Neri Church in SE Portland and organized by fellow Master Recycler Julie Gefroh is just around the corner: September 5-7, 2008. Muddy Boot features live music all weekend long, organic foods, exhibitor booths (including some EnviroMom sponsors), kids' activities and adult workshops. Muddy Boot also does a fabulous job at waste prevention -- love that!

Highlights include:

  • Keynote address by Dr. Wes Jackson, widely recognized as a leader in the international movement for more sustainable agriculture, speaking on “The Necessity of an Agriculture Where Nature Is the Measure,” The keynote is on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7pm. Tickets are $15/person and available from Brown Paper Tickets or by calling 503-231-4955.
  • The festival part is on Saturday, Sept. 6, noon to 9pm, and Sunday, Sept. 7, noon to 6pm on the St. Philip Neri church grounds (2408 SE 16th Ave.). $5 per person, with 12 and under free.
  • For the kiddos: activities and programs specifically tailored for children, aimed at helping kids learn about and care for our environment and world, including: puppet shows and puppet-making workshops, making and racing solar bottle boats, veggie derby races, compiling herb starts to be taken home and planted, making art from reusable materials, and learning about wind power by making pinwheels.
  • For the grown-ups: workshops will provide hands-on information about eating locally and seasonally in Portland, effects of a sustainable diet on your health, composting, green building, solar energy for your home, eco-roofs, and “green” parenting.
