Staying true to your green with back-to-school lists
Here's a great email from RoseG about back-to-school supply lists. I have been sitting on our list. A part of me thinks I should just order it all from Schoolhouse Supplies like I did last year. A part of me thinks I can do it more greenly than they do, but that would entail some running around town (OK by bike, but more likely by car). Then a part of me wonders why I have to buy a new pair of scissors every year. I get that the paper and other stuff gets "consumed" but the scissors?? Anyway, that's just me. Here's RoseG's dilemma:
Hey girls. I'm surprised you guys haven't covered back to school lists yet. We have tried to purchase close to 100% recycled content on most of the list (or reuse items that we already have) as well as a PVC free bookbag (by Fleurville http://fleurville.com/) and soy crayons (Prang). But I'm feeling very conflicted about one particular item: baby wipes. Our teacher has requested 4 boxes of baby wipes from each child. Ugh! I sent her an email asking what they will be using them for and she said they use them to 'wipe hands and desktops for snack, and use in general for sticky hands, especially during cold season! I think it's very effective'. I told her I had a serious problem with purchasing these and if buying Method cleaning wipes would be 'OK'. She said it wasn't a problem but, I feel like I should reply back. We aren't nearly as progressive out here in NJ as you are in Portland and I think I might be butting my head against a concrete wall. Any suggestions?
