Recommendations on produce and bulk cloth bags

You may be surprised to learn this, but I suck at remembering to bring produce and bulk bags when I shop. Well, I don't totally suck. I 95% suck. I do remember to bring bags when I go to the farmer's market to pick up our CSA box -- probably because they don't provide any plastic bags or twist ties in the back of the farm stand, and also, there's no one giving me the stink eye if I use an old bread bag or newspaper bag to stash my carrots or kale.

So why then, do I regularly fail to remember to bring them to the grocery store? With my shopping bags, it's easy. Empty and put back. Produce and bulk bags do not get emptied so efficiently in our household. Perhaps I need a new system?

Granted, my current system is not working, but it would seem easiest to reuse existing plastic bags already in my possession. However, I also wonder if I had some special bags, would I remember them more easily? The pride of ownership theory. I ran into a friend at the park the other day who had a light cotton drawstring bag from resuseablebags.com. I had only ever seen them online, and was wondering:

  • how hard/easy they would be to make?
  • if I did try to make them, should I go for lightweight fabric, or something a little cuter than plain cotton?
  • if you really need the drawstring top
  • for bulk purchases -- mightn't it be easier just to use one of the store's twist-ties and write down the bin number?
  • do the checkers grumble because they can't see what's inside?

Anyone using cloth or net produce and bulk bags with some wisdom to share before I go off and crazily try to make some of my own?
