Used and new gifts: breaking old taboos

New-used-books
One of these books is new, and one is used. Can you tell which one is which?

My older daughter turned 7 this past week, and these two books were given to my budding bookworm from a dear neighbor who is also my daughter's God-father. I don't think I would have even noticed that one was used, had the giver not mentioned it. I reacted as you would expect an EnviroMom to: "Used books are great! No need to apologize! We LOVE used books!" Yet, I think had I been in his position, I might have done the same. As much as I promote reuse, I'm not immune to the societal taboo in giving used gifts. With Heather, no problem. She'd expect a gift from our family to be used or hand-crafted. Say with my mother-in-law, I'd feel like I needed to explain.

Do you feel comfortable giving used gifts? For the record, the book on the bottom is the used one.
