Baby step: just start thinking
Renee and I were interviewed for a local TV program last week about 'going green' and how we approach it. As you know, we're big fans of baby steps. It was funny -- the reporter asked what our very first baby step was, and neither one of us could remember because we've each taken so many. All of those little victories have just become part of everyday life. Some were quick and easy, like switching over to cloth napkins and putting recycling cans in the bathroom. Others, like food scrap composting, took a little longer to figure out. But it made me realize that just thinking about changes is a baby step in itself.
A lot of you are probably not super-new to green living. But maybe some of you are just starting to think about it, which is why you're here. The cool thing is that you are already on your way because you've recognized that you want to make some changes. Your mind is open and you are going to start paying attention more and more as you come across blogs, articles and tidbits of conversations about living lightly. And pretty soon you're going to hit on something that you can change right away, and you'll do it and have the confidence to tackle the next thing.
But don't get frustrated by some of the bigger things. Maybe the idea of being a one-car family is appealing, but you just don't see how it could work. Let it simmer. It might take a few years, but don't get frustrated because you will get there. I've been thinking about riding my bike for local errands for over two years now. I've got a bike and two fairly strong legs, but I haven't really started tooling around the 'hood yet. But one day I will because I'll be ready. In the meantime, I've made all sorts of other changes that keep me motivated and receptive to new ideas. That greywater system? It's simmering. Weaning my kids off of packaged snacks? Done.
Don't get frustrated and overwhelmed. Celebrate the baby steps and enjoy the journey!
