How do you filter your tap water?

DSCN3628 I have a love/hate relationship with my Brita pitcher. I've been using one since forever. I don't even remember why I started. Probably a roommate/flatmate had one at one point in my life, and then it just became the norm. Now that I do really adult things like read the municipal water quality report, I'm glad we filter the water and that we drink tap. But maybe a new water pitcher might just be the ticket?

Here's what I like about the Brita:

  • Filters are easy to change
  • Filters are easy to get (The last time I bought a case of them right before we discontinued our Costco membership and I'm pretty sure it will hold us until my kids go off to college. OK. Maybe not that long.)
  • Some places will actually recycle Brita filters (but so far, no where near me, and mailing them is also an option)

Here's what I don't like about the Brita:

  • It's plastic and every time I've replaced one was because the plastic jug broke
  • It can't be run through the dishwasher, and mine gets a little green looking sometimes because I like room-temp water instead of chilled in the fridge
  • It's plastic, and once when I went to a talk about toxics in the home the scare-tactic presenter said something alarming like: 'Is anyone still using a Brita pitcher? You must stop before you poison everyone in your family!' Attention-grabbing, but not necessarily a good facilitation of discussion. I kept my Brita pitcher usage to myself, thankyouverymuch.

The last time I was at New Seasons, I took an extra long gander at the water bottle, water and water filtration department, hoping to find some a beautiful, glass, reasonably priced option that would still use the same filters. Nada. Zip. Just Brita pitchers. I hear Whole Foods has something, but rarely make it there. Laziness takes over after that.

So I'm asking you: How do you filter your tap water? Are there alternative tap water filtration pitchers that you love?
