EnviroMom supports 350.org International Day of Climate Action
I've been getting emails for a while now from the 350.org people. I've read about the magic 350 number, and I buy into science behind Bill McKibben's assertion that we must get down to 350 (the safe upper limit of atmospheric carbon dioxide). I've signed the petition asking for an 'ambitious, fair and binding global climate deal.' I've looked into some of the local events planned for October 24, 2009, the International Day of Climate Action, and hope to take part in a way that will be meaningful for my family. I've watched the moving video by President Nasheed of the Maldives. Have you seen it?
While raking leaves with the kids yesterday, we had a chat about this video. We'd recently been to the beach, and had nearly all our stuff soaked by a big wave as the tide started coming in. So I talked with them about a whole country getting covered by water. Ceasing to exist. Forever. Finito. End of story. Surprisingly, my kids seemed to get it. It would suck, was their consensus.
Here at EnviroMom, we sometimes question who we are. Are we just a couple of moms who like to share what we've learned about reducing, reusing and recycling? Or, are we activists? Does any of it really make a difference? I don't know the answer to that, but we like to hope it does.
What about you? Have you signed the 350.org petition? Are you planning a local action or participating? What does the 350.org International Day of Climate Action mean to you?
