Baby step: how to remember to reuse bulk shopping bags
I get it: the goal of buying in bulk is to reduce the amount of packaging. But then, I find myself at the store time and time again, grabbing a new bulk bag more often that I'd like to confess. I never fail to be mortified at myself when I do that.
Yet, finally I've found a tiny little baby step that helps me to reuse the bulk bags. When I'm making out my grocery list and put something down like coffee, dishwasher detergent, or a bulk grain, I clip the last bag I used for such purchases right to my grocery list! I can report success now in consistently reusing bulk bags for coffee and dishwasher powder. With the added bonus that I don't even have to write the bulk bin number on the bag any more, since it's already there!!
I will confess I'm still not good about reusing the plastic bags. Every once in a while I remember. And no, I've never gotten around to making or getting any cloth produce or bulk bags. The best way I remember to reuse the plastic ones is by putting a stash in my car, and grabbing a handful at the same time I get out my big shopping bags prior to going into the store. My new thing is to review the grocery list prior to shopping, and if I have bulk items on the list, to grab some old plastic bags from home, so I enter the store prepared. That's the plan. Usually I'm shopping like a bat out of hell in the 20 minutes I have before the bus drops the kids home from school -- so calm, careful planning and shopping aren't the norm. Note to self: work on that.
What helps you remember to reuse bulk and produce bags?
