Portland: curbside composting? plus styrofoam recycling news

Could it finally be happening? Could Portland be getting a curbside food scrap composting program in the near future? Our latest Master Recycler newsletter is giving us hope: two companies are setting up food composting facilities in the metro area, and we *might* see a pilot program unveiled as early as this Spring. Only 1500 households would initially participate, and if it's a success we'll all be composting food waste curbside one day. Personally, I think my family will continue backyard fruit and veggie composting (I just love reaping the black, earthy rewards!), though I'd welcome the chance to compost meat, dairy and grain scraps like Seattle. Stay tuned...

Now for your unofficial Guide to Recycling Styrofoam in Portland...(warning, it's a little confusing)

Take clean foam peanuts to any UPS outlet and most other mailing center-type businesses.

Styrofoam trays (clean!) and block packaging material can be recycled at Total Reclaim for $5 per carload: 5805 NE Columbia, 503-281-1899.

Styrofoam block (but not trays) can be recycled for free at three Recology (formerly PLC Recycling) locations: 6400 SE 101st Ave. Portland; 4044 N. Suttle, Portland; 16020 S. Park Place Court, Oregon City (and this location WILL accept styrofoam peanuts, too.)

If you don't get around to recycling your styrofoam for a few weeks, it's always a good idea to check their Web sites or call first to make sure they still accept it.

In addition, there are two upcoming block styrofoam collection events, $5 per carload or $10 per truck, van or SUV load:

January 10, 9am-3pm at 4101 Kruse Way in Lake Oswego

January 30, 10am-2pm at Bridlemile Elementary, 4300 SW 47th in Portland
