How do you celebrate Earth Day?
The 40th anniversary of Earth Day approaches: April 22.
Let's do a little flashback, shall we? That first Earth Day happened on April 22, 1970. If you were born, you were probably wearing some serious polyester, with wide collars and flares. According to the history books, around 20 million Americans took to the streets and protested the deterioration of the environment. That first Earth Day kicked off the modern environmental movement, and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
OK. Now back to 2010. How do you observe Earth Day? Do you volunteer? Do you help with Reduce-Reuse-Recycle projects in your kids' schools? Last year, our school's cloth napkin project rocked. This year, we're working on a variety of green month themes, which will include a cloth bag artist-in-residence project and persuading the school kids to write persuasive letters to their elected representatives to improve funding for school lunches so that food is healthier.
In many ways, since drinking the green Kool-Aid, I feel we live our lives as if every day were Earth Day. Yet I'm very interested to hear how others celebrate and observe that groundbreaking day, especially as we approach this big anniversary.
