EnviroMom.com launched in March 2007. It is a site for anyone who wants to live lightly on the planet. Whether you are just starting down the road to greener living or have been doing it for years, you'll find a supportive and respectful community of like-minded souls here. We subscribe to the 'baby-step' approach, which is the path we've both taken. Making lifestyle changes can't happen overnight, but it can happen over time with support and encouragement. That's what we want to provide. As we navigate these environmental waters ourselves, we hope that our readers will see that if two busy moms can do it, so can they.
About the co-founders: Heather Hawkins & Renee Limon
Heather and Renee are stay-at-home moms, best friends and neighbors who met in the Hillsdale neighborhood of SW Portland. They each have two children who happen to be the same ages (9 and 6) and attended the same schools. Renee and Heather both completed the Master Recycler course offered through Portland's regional government, which gave them a greater understanding of Reduce/Reuse/Recycle and how their choices and actions impact the natural environment. When they launched EnviroMom in March 2007, they formed their first GreenGroup -- a group of moms who meet monthly and exchange ideas on green living with children. They are not experts -- not by a long shot -- but they are trying to raise their kids to care about the environment and manage healthy households.
Heather grew up in Minnesota and Indiana, and then hightailed it Portland after graduating from the Indiana University School of Journalism in 1992. She was as surprised as anyone when she agreed to move her family to Columbus, Ohio in 2010. After a career in orchestra management and public relations, she left the workforce in 2004 to raise her two kids. Aside from blogging and environmental pursuits, Heather enjoys good fiction, winning at Scrabble, red wine, Jon Stewart and date nights with her husband, David. She dreams of raising goats and making cheese.
Renee was born in Maryland, raised in the Midwest, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a double major in Journalism and French. Hoping to find a way to employ both her majors, she headed to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida – which was supposed to be a stepping-stone to Disneyland Paris. Fate intervened and she met her husband at Disney World. Marriage took her away from Mickey Mouse and led to a stint in high-tech in Silicon Valley, California. When she and her husband decided to start a family, California no longer felt like a good fit. Portland beckoned, and has been home to the Limons since spring 2000. When not blogging, you'll often find Renee with her nose stuck between the pages of a good post-global warming distopian novel, musing "That doesn't sound so bad. I think I can live like that...."
In November 2010, Heather's family moved to Columbus, Ohio. Having left the green utopia of Portland, Heather's getting a chance to apply her green values in a new place.
