How many enviroMoms does it take to change a light bulb?

What do Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Al Gore, Oprah, Heather and I have in common? I wish the answer was that we are all getting together for a wine- tasting this weekend, but that would be a lie. The boring but true answer is that we care about the environment. For those of us who have kids, we want there to be a living planet for our children and our children's children.

I just got finished watching Global Warming 101 (yesterday's Oprah show featuring Al Gore). He talks about his book and movie An Inconvenient Truth and the things we can do to make a difference. Here are five simple things you can do to slow down global warming:

  • Purchase compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Insulate/blanket your electric hot water heater (there are specially made blankets available from home improvement stores)
  • Change your air filters in your heating/cooling systems
  • Use a programmable thermostat and adjust temps a few degrees higher in warm months and cooler in cold months (my husband takes this one way too seriously - you don't want to take you coat off when you visit our house this winter!)
  • Use solar lights for landscaping

The book and DVD of An Inconvenient Truth are available for purchase -  or at the very least a rental or borrow from the library. I confess there are times when I feel overwhelmed by the problems of our world. I also get overwhelmed by the questions my daughters ask me on a simple car drive: Why did you just stop? What are angels? Why do swipers take things that aren't theirs?

My point is that there is something we can do about global warming. I may never be able to answer all my daughters questions and be able to drive safely at the same time.
