After the Flush: our new favorite story

I recently picked up an educational brochure called "after the flush" put out by the Portland Environmental Services group. I have an enquiring mind. I like to know these things.

Much to my suprise, my kids wanted to read it too. It's since become one of our favorite bedtime stories. I thought about dumbing down the lingo a bit, but decided not to. So now we read about "primary clarifiers," "biosolids" and "chlorination" on a daily basis. The little one will ask, "what's sludge, mama?"

What I learned (besides the fact that a lot happens after the flush...): kids are never too young to learn about big topics involving big words. And that -- when they can understand why -- they can be your best advocates in changing habits and reducing home water usage.
