Eco-friendly cosmetics -- what do you recommend?

Up until recently I've been make-up free for most of my life. In high school I wore a little, but I always felt clown-ish. In my 20s and 30s I just didn't want to take the time to mess with it. Now with 40 only a couple years away, I'm starting to dabble in cosmetics again to, you know, even out and brighten up the ol' visage. I've transitioned my skin care regime over to a gentler, less-toxic cleanser and moisturizer, so now I think it's only appropriate (and responsible) to do the same with cosmetics. But where to start?

I've seen the make-up counter at Whole Foods and New Seasons, but the stuff is spendy. Before I plunk down some dough, I'd love to hear about brands you guys like. What about eco-friendly mascara? Is there such a thing, and does it clump, flake and run? What about these mineral-based cosmetics...did I read somewhere that they make your skin kind of glimmery? Is that a desirable look? Lipstick, anyone? Please help this cosmetically-challenged EnviroMom update her look responsibly!
